Ontario's BioDiversity Strategy Launched June 22, 2011
On June 22, 2011 the Biodiversity Council of Ontario launched the Ontario BioDiversity Strategy.  The strategy aligns with the International 10 Year Plan of Work and the Aichi Targets. This shows how the different levels of government can work towards collective goals.  To see the Ontario Strategy, click here.

At the launch event, Leslie Adams, General Manager of P.O.W.E.R. spoke to the connections and need to enable everyone to take action for BioDiversity.  Leslie also had the honour of reading a statement from Ahmed Djhoglaf, the Executive Secretary of the Convention on Biological Diversity.  For Mr. Djhoglaf's statement click here. For the slides presented by Leslie click here.

With the International and Provincial levels laying out a path forward, the work now turns too enabling action for BioDiversity at the local and National levels, while developing ways to implement and identify indicators for the targets articulated in the Provincial and International strategies - what can you do to take action?

BIODIVERSITY MATTERS- Thanks Eco Action!
P.O.W.E.R. is working towards making the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and BioDiversity relevant in Canada and abroad.  We are seeking to implement the 10 Year Plan of Work from the CBD so that we all have a role in the future of Life on Earth. This work is supported by many people and organizations.  The first formal sponsor for this work came from the Eco Action Community Fund.  What this means is that This Project was undertaken with the financial support of the Government of Canada provided through the Department of the Environment.

OUTDOOR EDUCATION AND SERVICE LEARNING FOR BIODIVERSITY
Between 2010 and 2012 roughly 1600 student days will be spent learning about and taking actions for BioDiversity.  This work brings another layer to our Engaging Youth in the Environment for Sustainability (EYES) program.  Outdoor education will take place at Terra Cotta Conservation Area in partnership with Credit Valley Conservation.  The service learning will be helping restore natural areas in Halton Hills in Georgetown, Acton and on the Niagara Escarpment.  All the trees planted in 2011 will be dedicated to barbara Halsall.

CELEBRATING BIODIVERSITY
Throught the next ten years, P.O.W.E.R. will be looking and creating opportunities to get to know, celebrate and take actions for BioDiversity.  Two signature events here are our annual International Day for Biological Diversity (IDB) celebration on May 22 at the Georgetwon Marketplace and the BioDivesity Matters Youth confrences. We are also hosting other events and getting out to the public in as many ways as possible to communicate, educate, raise public awareness and take actions for BioDiversity.

GREENWAVE
The Greenwave is like Earth Hour for BioDiversity.  Taking place at 10 am each May 22, the program asks each of us to plant a native species and to register the action on the Greenwave website.  Developed with schools and students in mind, P.O.W.E.R. will see 150 trees planted in 2010 and 2011 in celebration of the Greenwave.
