One of the most serious problems facing our planet is the broad public acceptance of policies, programs and practices that are directly tied to the sustainability of our planet, and the failure of humans to fully commit themselves to environmental preservation and conservation.
Given Town Council’s commitment to undertaking actions that will significantly contribute to the achievement of a healthier environment, Mayor Rick Bonnette assembled a Mayor’s Green Plan Task
Force for the purposes of preparing a “Green Plan” for the Town of Halton Hills. Approved by Council in June 2007, the Task Force consisted of a diverse group of individuals that best represents the needs of Halton Hills. Task Force representation included:
- Members of Halton Hills Council;
- Halton Hills staff;
- Halton Hills Hydro
- Healthy Options for People & the Environment (H.O.P.E.);
- Protect Our Water and Environmental Resources (P.O.W.E.R.);
- Christ the King Secondary School;
- Town Environmental Advisory Committee;
- Neilson Dairy;
- Halton Federation of Agriculture; and
- Halton Hills Chamber of Commerce.
The Task Force met regularly, from June – Nov 2007 to discuss and develop the terms for what will form the Town’s “Green Plan”.
On December 10, 2007, Council considered Report ADMIN-2007-0049. After doing so, among other things, Council decided to endorse the Halton Hills Green Plan in principle.
The Green Plan will provide a basis to guide the Town and the community on developing and implementing future “green” strategies and actions. The Green Plan is the result of six months of dedicated work by the Mayor’s Green Plan Task Force.
The Green Plan reconfirms the Town’s commitment to environmental protection and enhancement. In addition, the Plan establishes Halton Hills as a community of leaders, not followers, demonstrating that the Town was, is and remains committed to ensuring that it is proactive rather than reactive in protecting and enhancing the environment. The Green Plan is focused on actions that are “PAREE” or Practical, Affordable, Reasonable, Enforceable and Educational.
